First Facebook Divorce

Friday, February 6th, 2009

There is no good way to broach the subject of divorce with your spouse, but technology keeps bringing us new ways to do it.

According to the Daily News, Neil Brady of England, married to Emma Brady for 12 years, updated his status on Facebook.

“Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady,” it read.

The problem is that Emma says she had no idea her marriage was in trouble until a friend, who saw the post, called her at work to see if she was all right.  Neil insists, however, that he had discussed separation with Emma several times before updating his status.

Husband Pays Ex $2.7 Million for Half of Maddoff Fund

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Steven Simkin is a wealthy real estate lawyer in a big law firm in New York.  He was married to Laura Simkin for over 30 years.  They acquired lots of assets during that time, including  homes in Manhattan and Scarsdale.  They also invested their savings with Bernard Madoff.

They separated in January 2002.  It took them nearly two years to negotiate a marital settlement agreement.  The statements from Madoff said their account was worth $5.4 million.  They agreed the Husband would pay half that amount to the Wife in cash and that the Husband would keep the account.   They had an uncontested divorced in 2006 and Steven paid Laura the $2.7 million.  He kept the Madoff account.

Now that Bernard has admitted to running a Ponzi scheme, it appears the account is worthless.   Laura has the cash and Steven has nothing.

So Steven is suing his ex-wife to recover the money he paid her.   He is asking the court to revise the Agreement to prevent his ex-wife from receiving a windfall.

Divorce Makes You Older

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

A scientific study has found that twins who had been divorced appeared nearly two years older than their siblings who were married, single or even widowed.  Plastic Surgeon Bahaman Guyuron and colleagues had independent observers look at digital images of 186 pairs of identical twins.

“A person’s heritage may initially dictate how they age but if you introduce certain factors into your life, you will certainly age faster. Likewise, if you avoid those factors you can slow down the hands of time,” said Dr. Guyuron.

“In this study, we looked at identical twins because they are genetically programmed to age exactly the same, and in doing so we essentially discovered that, when it comes to your face, it is possible to cheat your biological clock.”

The study found that weight and antidepressants could also make one twin look older.

Barbie and Ken Head for Splitsville

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Mattel says the perfect couple is breaking up, according to an article by Samantha  Critchell at RedOrbit.com.  Russell Arons, vice president of marketing at Mattel, speaking as Barbie and Ken’s “business manager”, said the couple “feel it’s time to spend some quality time – apart.”

“Like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance has come to an end,” said Arons.  But the couple “will remain friends.”

The separation, after 43 years together, may be due to Ken’s reluctance to getting married.   And Barbie, who is 50 now, still has all those bridal clothes.
