Husband Forgets to Update Facebook Status

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Today Facebook launches its highly anticipated IPO.  So naturally we wanted to bring you a Facebook divorce story.

Laura Weisman reports in the San Francisco Chronicle that a woman in India has filed for divorce because her husband had not updated his relationship status on Facebook.  He was still listed as “single instead of “married”.  He says he was distracted with family and business and forgot to change it.

The couple had an arranged marriage just two months ago.  The judge has ordered the couple to undergo counseling over the next six months.

Apparently, there are several cases in India where spouses in arranged marriages have asked the court to divorce them on flimsy reasons, such as who makes the tea or failure to take an in-law’s phone call.

Facebook Made Me Do It

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The Telegraph in the U.K. reports that one in five divorce petitions filed by Divorce-Online contain references to Facebook.

The divorce lawyers claim that social websites like Facebook fuel divorces because they tempt people to cheat on their spouses.  They cite inappropriate sexual chats or flirty emals and messages discovered by suspicious spouses.

JR Raphael at PC World sees it differently.  The problem is not Facebook he says.  The problem is cheating spouses.  Facebook is only the medium.

First Facebook Divorce

Friday, February 6th, 2009

There is no good way to broach the subject of divorce with your spouse, but technology keeps bringing us new ways to do it.

According to the Daily News, Neil Brady of England, married to Emma Brady for 12 years, updated his status on Facebook.

“Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady,” it read.

The problem is that Emma says she had no idea her marriage was in trouble until a friend, who saw the post, called her at work to see if she was all right.  Neil insists, however, that he had discussed separation with Emma several times before updating his status.
